I wonder:

why are there mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are pretty difficult to justify when they're so annoying and especially because some transmit diseases that sicken or kill millions of humans globally. But most mosquito species don't ever human drink blood; they prefer animal hosts - and that's only the females that need protein to lay eggs, males drink nectar from flowers! Mosquitoes may be pollinators of orchids, and their larvae are important detrivores that feed on decaying plant material in water systems. And of course mosquitoes are an essential food source for other animals like spiders and bats.
